WizKids Company Closes Down

Send to friendPrinter-friendly version

The big news this week was that WizKids has ceased operations and closed up shop.

Scott Silverstein, CEO of Topps, said “This was an extremely difficult decision. While the company will still actively pursue gaming initiatives, we feel it is necessary to align our efforts more closely with Topps current sports and entertainment offerings which are being developed within our New York office.”

Many people were affected by this company's shutdown, and our hearts go out to them. Catalyst Game Studios issued a statement saying that their products are not affected by this company closing. For the full company press release, visit the announcement of WizKids closing for more information.

It's sad to see them go...

But I am glad Shadowrun and Battletech are unaffected.

Interesting, but also not

Interesting, but also not surprised, their games were drying up as was their customer base.

Very surprising to me.

Topps just bought WizKids in 2003, so why are they closing it down?  I agree that the fan base was drying up, but I think that is mainly due to poor marketing on the end of Topps.  Considering the statement, it looks like the company was acquired to remove a competitor and that is all.

Catalyst may save the day

I just read a report on gamingreport.com that Catalyst Games (the same people who saved Shadowrun and Classic Battletech when FASA closed) has put in a bid to Topps to take over the Wizkids properties.  It's still in the early stages but if Topps can make any money out of it I'm sure they will be willing to deal.

Keep your finges crossed!
