Slasher Flick

From the title, you may think this is another one of those Wayans' Brothers movies that poke fun at every horror picture to ever come out. But you'd be wrong here. And be thankful for that! Slasher Flick is labeled as the horror movie role-playing game, and Spectrum Games held nothing back with this genre-encapsulating RPG. So, log out of those online casinos and check out an RPG that you can really sink your teeth into.

Slasher Flick does a great job of blending the story with the actual gameplay. A lot of games of the genre focus intently on telling a story, thus the gaming suffers as a result. Slasher dives into the action as two main characters, playing cooperatively, create a vibrant story as the game progresses. You're part of a group of victims who fight feverishly to survive the homicidal ambush of a deranged killer. Are you interested yet?

The P&P RPG gives players a detailed book of 110 pages that is very meticulously laid-out and covers 6 thorough chapters that unveil the gaming rules, provide a setting, and illustrate a horror style that's easy to follow. The chapters provide a general introduction, genre discussion, game rules, character creation, advice for players and the director, and rules for building the killer. Characters in the game have four stats: Finesse, Brains, Spirit and Brawn. And basic adjectives are used as qualities/characteristics, like "driver" for example.

There's nothing overly complicated or uniquely original about the actual gameplay features, but the game itself encompasses the horror genre perfectly. With the dice-rolling game features, online craps players may have an advantage. But don't count on it. The subject matter of the game is what you may expect from a horror movie: R-rated and unsuitable for small children, due to the killing sprees, of course. However, you will find nothing overtly shocking or graphic in the text.

The rules cover a series of task-based mechanics framed well by story-based mechanics, and what you're left with is an end result that is truly one-of-a-kind. Slasher Flick is a great pick for anyone who appreciates RPGs. Its author, Cynthia Celeste Miller, is truly an unsung hero of the RPG world.
