OgreCave review – Adaptoid
As the holiday gift shopping season closes in on us, OgreCave continues to offer insight on worthwhile game products. To that end, Lee has provided his review of Adaptoid by nestorgames. This abstract strategy board game is thematically similar to Ursuppe/Primordial Soup in that little critters are growing and attacking each other, but Adaptoid is a simpler game, and much quicker. Read on to learn what Lee thought of it, and stay tuned later this week for more gift suggestions from our ninth annual OgreCave Christmas Gift Guide.
Taste the donut: FreeMarket RPG beta available
There’s still some capacity in the “Colony Program,” a.k.a. beta-PDF giveaway, for FreeMarket, the transhumanist RPG by Luke Crane of Burning Wheel and Jared Sorenson of inSpectres, Action Castle and many others. The beta is capped at 1000 copies, just like the lavish print edition planned for next year.
Me, I think everyone who’s interested in the technology of roleplaying should have a look at this. It’s the first game I know of that truly reverses “kill them and take their stuff” – all the way into “no one can die and you want to give them all presents.” And yes, it makes that work, turning it into a tense, motivating, probably hilarious saga of social climbing and idealisms of all sorts. It’s the most developed, wide-ranging and at times gleefully evil take on the concept “all combat is social combat” that I’ve yet seen. I’m surprised it isn’t catching more hate from the usual Internet suspects, because it is a direct and vicious frontal assault on roleplaying’s indulgence of the Geek Social Fallacies.
Dredd is not the only Judge in town!
In Mega-City One a brutal murder is discovered, seemingly of unnatural origin. Around the globe there is a massive surge in psychic phenomena as people fall prey to visions and religious mania. It seems that the world is on the brink of a psychic apocalypse and Psi Judge Anderson must travel into the heart of Tibet to find the source of the disturbance!
This collection brings together the very best of Alan Grant's (Lobo) and Arthur Ranson's (Button Man) work on this iconic comics character.
JUDGE ANDERSON: SHAMBALLA is the latest release from 2000 AD at DriveThruComics.com.

Evil dice approaching from Steve Jackson Games
I was just commenting to a friend that I hadn’t seen any new dice games for a while, and suddenly Steve Jackson Games has added two dice games to its product release schedule next year. Zombie Dice invites 3-8 players to “Eat brains” and “Don’t get shotgunned” in an attempt to gather as many of the 13 custom victim dice as possible before the shotgun blasts stop them. Playable in 10-20 minutes, the game will include a custom dice cup and sell for $13.13 (not a typo). Cthulhu Dice uses a large custom 12-sided die with tentacles, Elder signs, Cthulhu and such, and pits 3-8 players against each other in a quick fight (10 minutes) to be the last sane cultist standing. Players can cause opponents to lose sanity, or even steal it from them, but Cthulhu damages everyone’s mind, and if no one is sane at the end, Cthulhu wins. Lose your sanity over and over for the low price of $4.99. Both games would’ve been welcome additions to our Screams from the Cave last month, but zombies and Cthulhu are a good time any season, and are due to release in March 2010.
Is “shotgunned” a word? It should be.
OgreCave review – Ticket to Ride: Europa 1912
Adding value to a great boardgame is – well, great, and that’s exactly what Days of Wonder has provided for Ticket to Ride: Europe in the form of a new expansion. Lee gives us the scoop today in his review of Ticket to Ride: Europa 1912, a card-based expansion that adds new ways to play in the same vein as the Ticket to Ride: 1910 set, and also adds an entirely new game mechanic to the mix. Read on, and see if you need to meet this expansion at the station.
